Who can apply
To apply for Canadian citizenship, most applicants must
- Be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days).
- Have filed their taxes in Canada.
- Pass a citizenship test.
- Prove their language skills in English or French.
Apply
You can apply online or on paper. Apply on paper only if you’re not eligible to apply online. Don’t apply both ways.
The fees are the same to apply online or on paper:
- Adult (18 or older): $630
- Minor (under 18): $100

After the citizenship ceremony

There may be other requirements that apply. You can check with us if you are eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
You can apply for Canadian citizenship either online or on paper. You should apply online if you are eligible to do so. If you are not eligible to apply online, you must apply on paper. The fees for applying for citizenship are the same whether you apply online or on paper: $630 for adults (age 18 or older) and $100 for minors (under age 18). You must pay your fees online and include the receipts in your application.
If your application is missing any required information, documents, or the fee receipt, it will be returned to you. After you apply, you may be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony, where you will be required to take the Oath of Citizenship and become a Canadian citizen.
After the citizenship ceremony, you may be interested in obtaining a Canadian passport, registering to vote in elections, and taking advantage of the 1 year of free admission to Canada’s natural parks and cultural centers that is offered to new citizens.

- You must wait to get your citizenship certificate after the ceremony before you can apply for a passport.
- A valid Canadian passport proves you have the right to enter Canada.
- Your citizenship certificate is not a travel document.
