Foreign workers and students are typically admitted for a period of time that corresponds with the duration of their work or study permit, while visitors are generally admitted for a period of six months. It is important to note that all foreign nationals, unless exempt, must obtain a visa before arriving in Canada and present it at the port of entry. A visitor visa can be extended from within Canada. In order to be eligible for a visitor visa, a foreign national must hold a valid passport or travel document, have sufficient funds to cover their stay in Canada, be able to demonstrate strong ties to their home country (such as a job, family ties, property, and assets), and be able to prove their intention to leave Canada at the end of their visit.
